There are a lot of
different ways to look at drafting a fantasy football team. One that I've used
to some extent is looking at conferences as a whole and seeing what weakness
are there that I can take advantage of. Looking first at the AFC South division
there is only one defense that stands out as a matchup threat, and that of
course belongs to the Houston Texans. I understand both the Colts and the
Jaguars have made additions to their defense and could improve from last year,
but when you peel back all that optimism I think we can all agree that the
Texans have the scariest Defense in this division.
Now there are some givens
here in this division. The first being that Andrew Luck is the best pick out of
this division. Had I written this article a few days or weeks earlier I may
have tried to make a case for Adrian Foster. Over the next few articles I’m going to breakdown which
players could return good value those few weeks out of the season when they are
playing divisional games.
Top performers:
1. Andrew Luck:
Only team in the AFC South that should make you think twice about playing Luck
is going to be the Texans defensive line. Otherwise sit back and watch the
points pile up.
2. T.Y. Hilton:
Not many secondary’s in this division that would make me not put Hilton in my
starting lineup. Fortunately the best corner in this division wears a Colts
jersey. The only matchup that could cause a drop in production for Hilton is
going to be the Texans. If they aren’t giving Luck time to throw you may not
see a big play from T.Y.
3. DeAndre Hopkins:
Outside of his quarterback the only person in this division that could pose a
threat to Hopkins production is going to be the Colts Vontae Davis. Might want
to look elsewhere is Davis is healthy.
4. Frank Gore: Watt, Wilfork, and Clowney. Those three names should
be enough to know that your odds of getting production out of Gore when he
faces the Texans is slim. Another team that I think could slow Gore down may
surprise you. I think the Jaguars may be a team that doesn’t shut Gore down,
but could slow his production down more than you would think. Especially
considering it wasn’t long ago the Jaguars were the matchup we waited all year
long for to see big fantasy production from our fantasy team.
5. Andre Johnson:
Again the defensive line the Texans have could cause lot of trouble for Luck,
which would more than likely mean a drop in numbers for Johnson and limit a big
play. Outside of that Johnson should be consistently good against the rest of
the division.
Worth a roster spot:
1. Allen Robinson
2. Julius Thomas
3. Delanie Walker
4. Kendall Wright
5. David Cobb
Late round flyers:
1. Blake Bortles
2. Allen Hurns
3. Marcus Mariota
4. Dorial
Green-Beckham
5. Denard Robinson
